Best Practices
In 2003, NSMFC and the Association of Municipal Administrators of Nova Scotia formed a joint committee – the Financial Management Capacity Building Committee. The goal of the Committee was to develop financial management best practices for municipalities in Nova Scotia. The Committee was representative of all municipalities in the province. It included finance professionals working in towns, regional municipalities and rural municipalities, as well as representatives from Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. The Committee used recommended practices that had been developed by the Government Finance Officers Association and adapted them to fit to Nova Scotia legislation and practices. The Committee developed 32 recommended best practices. These best practices have been arranged into the following categories:
